Who, you may ask, would be excited to capture a photograph of a snail mid-poo?
Ruth Owen, that’s who.
What’s more, she built a snail sanctuary in her backyard in order to capture close-up and personal photos of snails going about their daily lives, poo and all.
You see snails—and just about every other zoological, botanical, scientific, environmental and nonfiction subject there is—are precisely the stuff about which Ruth LOVES to write.

Ruth Owen started out happily producing beautiful, photo-filled nonfiction children’s books for other publishers. Then one of her publishers suggested she publish her OWN books.
And the seed was planted.
Ruth told her best friend Shan White about this newest dream. Many discussions, meetings, plans, and learning-curves later, Ruth and Shan became the co-founders and business partners behind Ruby Tuesday Books.
Ruth’s goal for Ruby Tuesday Books is to create informative books that kids ages 0-16 will love to read. To date, Ruby Tuesday Books offers over 150 titles across a wide range of nonfiction science topics, from plants and pollution to crawly creatures and geology.
Most of Ruby Tuesday’s titles lean heavily into using photographs of real-life subjects to pique the interest of young readers. And as Ruby Tuesday’s lead creator, Ruth takes the photographs that illustrate them.
It’s no wonder then that Ruby Tuesday’s books are irresistible resources for educators, librarians, and most importantly curious young readers. But don’t take MY word for it. Check out these upcoming Ruby Tuesday nonfiction series and individual titles!
